“LSGMI helped me get Medicaid benefits.”

When Mayra, a school teacher, was diagnosed with cancer, she was no longer able to work. She was awarded SSI disability and Medicaid benefits, and received extensive medical treatment for her condition. When her medical providers’ attempts to bill Medicaid were denied, Mayra was left with more than $37,000 in unpaid medical bills. With the help of an LSGMI lawyer, Medicaid agreed to pay Mayra’s bills and the burden of these medical expenses was lifted.

Community Legal Education Project

Through the Community Legal Education Project, individuals learn about their legal rights and responsibilities, enabling them to avoid legal problems and understand how to resolve them when they occur.

Legal Education Institute

The Legal Education Institute develops educational programs and workshops for the staff of social service providers who are often the low income population’s only link to mainstream society. This training helps them teach their clients how to avoid legal problems, identify situations where legal counsel is necessary, and know where to turn when legal help is needed.

Small Claims Court Clinic

The Small Claims Court Clinic offers low income individuals and families free legal advice from pro bono attorneys on how to file or defend small claims court matters. Common problems resolved by the clinic include worthless checks from employers, landlord/ tenant disputes involving money, and auto repair disputes.
